The Top Things to Do in the Miami Design District

miami district design

So for those headed down south this week for Design Miami or Art Basel, we’ve compiled a list of the latest additions to the neighborhood that you simply can’t miss. Like walking into luxury shops, gallery hopping in MDD could result in some pretty steep purchases if your pockets are deep enough. Instead, why not map out the local galleries, showrooms and museums within walking distance and make a point of stopping in at a handful that intrigue you. Snap some pics (of course, always ask if it’s OK first — most galleries will allow you to take photos with the flash off) and ogle the talents of artists from all over the world. Trendy locals love this aesthetically pleasing, Greece-inspired shop (adjacent to the ever-packed Mandolin Aegean Bistro), which offers a selection of off-the-beaten-path labels and bespoke homewares as well as coffee from a café in the front. Mrs. Mandolin is a great choice for shoppers who feel a tad intimidated by the huge, high-fashion brands dotting the Design District.

Design District Magazine covers it all, so you are in the know about the neighborhood everyone is talking about. I caught up recently with my friend Craig Robins, who is the visionary entrepreneur and real estate developer behind the Miami Design District and CEO of Dacra. Craig is the ultimate curator of great art, fashion, and food - which has made the Design District an epicenter of this special week and, frankly, every other week of the year in Miami. His distinctive approach to retail, passion for art and design, and commitment to innovation and sustainability have helped transform Miami to what it is now.

Finally, check out our best tips and tricks for planning a kid-friendly outing in the Miami Design District and take summer travel inspiration from some friends of the MDD who know how to vacation.

A native of Florida, Anthony moved to New York City in 2009 to hone his craft at Restaurant Daniel, subsequently leaving an indelible mark on the classic New York institution. Anthony also helped in opening the acclaimed Gabriel Kreuther restaurant, where he became culinary director. Under his leadership, the Gabriel Kreuther restaurant garnered two Michelin stars and received several accolades including Relais & Chateaux, Les Grande Tables du Monde, and the coveted AAA Five Diamond awards. The restaurant’s culinary team embraces the principles of regenerative, and sustainable farming, with an effort to create seasonal dishes that are both robust in flavor and nourishing.

ISSUE 2 2022

But the DD is also now one of the city's best dining destinations, with a high concentration of newly-minted Michelin starred restaurants (in addition to being ground zero for local chef Michael Schwartz’s flagship). Here are our picks for the best things to do and eat in Miami's Design District. Looking to attract bespoke and high-street retail brands with design excellence, the mixed-use development will have a ground floor with 17 modular retail units, totaling approximately 15,500 rentable square feet. Modular units can be combined with ease for larger footprints or remain singular for an individual brand experience. The developers are aligning with the global trend favoring boutique-like spaces in the retail landscape. The second and third floor will feature four commercial units, offering approximately 41,000 square feet, and will be geared towards businesses looking for trophy office locations in a highly designed building.

We round out the issue with art and design including a profile on Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz who celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the de la Cruz Collection and discuss their role as leaders and supporters of Miami’s art community. Our Design Miami/ section is packed with inspiring figures bound to pique everyone’s curiosity, from boundary-pushing designer Harry Nuriev to Jolie Ngo who takes ceramics into unchartered territories. Artist and designer Samuel Ross takes center stage this fall as we catch up with the multi-hyphenate visionary to learn more about his process and his latest collaboration with the Miami Design District. Tastemakers abound in this issue including artist and potter Jonathan Adler, design star Hugo Toro, art icon Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn and French gallerist Jacques Lacoste.

Finally, we get a sneak peek at Miami’s newest private club, The Moore, share our top 10 picks for holiday gifting and savor some of the best plant-based dishes in the neighborhood. For those seeking a quick caffeine fix or a taste of Middle Eastern cuisine, this food hall is a must-visit during a shopping spree. The scents of rotisserie chicken, beef pho, short rib tacos, and other dishes waft through the interior, creating a feast for the senses. Choosing just one offering is a challenge, but a few options stand out among the crowd. Indulge in the comfort of Dal Plin’s porcini mushroom fettuccine, savor the bold flavors of Coop’s double cheeseburger, or treat yourself to Sushi Yasu Tanaka’s 10-piece omakase feast, priced at $59.

The ICA (as you’re more likely to hear people call it) is a shiny museum housing some magnificent exhibits of contemporary art. Here you’ll see big names alongside criminally underrated and daring artists. The three-floor museum would certainly be worth every cent of your admission if it wasn’t free.

It is a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Miami that is known for its world-class shopping, dining, and art scene. The Design District is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in contemporary art and design. Our cover star is architect and designer Peter Marino who is noted nearly as much for his iconoclastic personal style as for his list of corporate and individual clients. On the list is the storied house of Chanel who has commissioned Marino for over 200 projects, including the recently opened Miami Design District boutique. Another exciting store opening on the horizon is Zimmerman –the luxury Australian label famous for their Boho-chic dresses and swimwear. Founder Nicky Zimmerman tells us how her hometown of Sydney influences each collection and why it continues to be her number one place to be.
